Effective ventilation for healthy living environment

We spend about half of the day in our own home. The room climate is an important factor for us to feel truly comfortable at home: Since fresh air is not only a matter of well-being, it also affects our health. Fresh air rich in oxygen is not only an effective means against headaches – regular air exchange also prevents the spread of pathogens, because ventilation helps to keep the concentration of viruses and bacteria in the ambient air at a low level.

Yet, manual airing requires action of the residents – not everyone has enough time or remembers to regularly air all rooms in their house in a sufficient manner. Then again, people suffering from allergies will do all they can to avoid opening the windows in their apartments and letting in the unfiltered outside air during certain times of the year.

Heat recovery ventilation combines a number of advantages: It performs constant air exchange in the entire house or apartment autonomously. Used room air is replaced with fresh outside air automatically. During this process, the outside air is filtered to make sure that no pollutants, pollen or viruses enter the living quarters.

Some of you are sure to be wondering whether or not ventilation units can spread or carry viruses and bacteria. The answer is NO.

What prevents the viruses from entering the building?

Viruses mainly spread through droplets they get attached to. If the right filters are installed, the virus-carrying droplets cannot enter the rooms through the outside pipes and supply pipes.

What prevents the viruses from spreading inside the living quarters through the MVHR systems?

The supply air and extract air ducts are strictly separated from each other. Due to this, it is nearly impossible that the extract air that may possibly contain droplets can be transported from one living area to other rooms via ventilation lines.

What prevents the viruses from escaping even in case of leaks?

Since extract air ducts are operated with underpressure, no extract air can escape even in case of leaks in the pipes.

Recommendations for the operation of ventilation systems

  • Do not switch off the ventilation systems. The outside (fresh) air percentage shall be kept as high as possible

  • Use filters with higher filtration efficiency, for example, ISO ePM1 filter class (formerly termed “F”)

  • Humidity in the rooms shall be not below 35 % and preferably above 40 %

  • Reduce overflow from different utilisation units to a minimum

  • Regular maintenance and servicing is essential to ensure safe and reliable operation of the system
